How Cabinet Refacing Work

Table of Contents

Removal and replacement, restaining, painting, and refacing are just some of the options available when it comes to updating your kitchen cabinets. That’s why it’s essential to undergo cabinet refacing in your kitchen to enhance its look. Between painting them and getting fully new ones, cabinet refacing is an expensive but worthwhile middle ground.

While redecorating the kitchen, a popular choice is to alter the look of the cabinets. It’s very uncommon for homeowners to get bored of the look of their cabinets and have them destroyed, even if they’re in fine structural shape.

Selling a perfectly good car just because you don’t like the colour is like this. Yet refacing, which gives most of the benefits of cabinet replacement at a fraction of the cost, may often significantly change your kitchen’s appearance.

What is Cabinet Refacing?

First, its doors and drawer fronts are removed to reface a cabinet. Next, the skins require proper replacement. Finally, you must apply a new veneer to the cabinet body (or “carcass”). Generally, hardware, including hinges, knobs, and pulls, is often replaced as part of the refacing process.

When updating your kitchen, opting for a new veneer is suggested. Changing out the cabinet pulls in your kitchen for something fresh is also a great idea. However, before beginning, check to see if you can reface your kitchen cabinets.

The carcass should be solid and made of plywood. Likewise, the surface on which the new veneer will be applied must be smooth.

The Kitchen Refacing Process

Refacing kitchen cabinets is a simple and basic process that ensures consistency regardless of where you get them. You can still use your kitchen as usual while our installers reface your cabinets. Below are the steps for undergoing a successful kitchen refacing process.

  • First, remove the cabinet faces, doors, and drawers.
  • The second step is using sandpaper and degreaser to ensure the refacing sticks well.
  • Third, the cabinet’s fronts are usually covered in a veneer that matches the rest. Initially, we use a robust adhesive to secure it in place. Then we nail it in with very few pins.
  • The fourth step is to put in the new cabinet and drawer fronts. You can install brand-new hinges or keep using the current ones if they are still in good shape.
  • In the fifth and last stage, I’ll double-check your satisfaction with you. When issues develop, the installer can resolve them.
  • After the refacing, the kitchen looks brand new, but the homeowner only spends about half as much as they would on new cabinets.

Cabinet Refacing Costs

Generally, refacing your cabinets is cheaper than removing and replacing them. Despite this, it can be quite heavy on your pocket. In most cases, refacing a kitchen’s cabinets will save you 40-50% compared to replacing them entirely.

Pros Of Refacing the Kitchen Cabinets

  • The Layout Remains Unchanged

Refacing is a great option for those happy with the current kitchen setup. They don’t have to worry about having a completely different kitchen.

  • Numerous Potential Cosmetic Changes

Whether looking for laminates or natural wood, veneer options are endless. You have numerous options to incorporate these cosmetic changes into your kitchen.

  • Cutting Back on Expenses

Generally, refacing a kitchen’s cabinets is far cheaper than installing brand-new, custom-built ones. Though, it’s important to factor in the correct amount of expense to avoid expenditure on undesirable kitchen elements.

  • Refacing is an Eco-Friendly Option for Renovations

Refacing keeps cabinet boxes out of landfills, which is especially important because many cabinet boxes are made of MDF, containing the potentially harmful chemical formaldehyde. Furthermore, it prevents further tree-cutting for making new cabinet boxes.

Cons of Refacing the Kitchen Cabinets

  • Cleaning and Maintenance

Staining and varnishing are optional but may be required for wood veneers as part of the finishing process.

  • Structure Can’t be Modified

Refacing is not an option if you need to make structural changes to your kitchen, such as moving walls or increasing the size of your countertops.

  • Contents of the Box Don’t Change

Without shelves or other storage choices, your current cabinets may require a significant investment to meet your storage needs.

  • DIY Can Be Challenging

Only the most dedicated and well-informed people should attempt veneering, a skill you must hone through practice. Though, putting in new cabinet doors and drawer fronts is a breeze.
